In the mid-sixties with the culverting of Miller's Pond, through to the late seventies, it became apparent that the one-time beauty spot was no more and despite clean-ups it was in danger of being used by the then council in their building plans.

Residents started to question these plans and through talks between Cllr Jack Candy and local resident Colin Oliphant, plans were made to fight back and, as Colin said..."In reflection people must have thought me a little batty, but it soon became an issue and the message spread. It wasn't long before Sholing residents came to our house asking questions such as how to stop the Council's plans"

After several public meetings matters escalated to become an election issue in the May of 1984 and "The Miller's Pond Presevation Society" was born, which through the baptism of fire and a lot of hard work became a registered charity later in the autumn of 1988 and .........."Sholing Valleys Study Association Centre".

Over the years the members have worked hard to raise funds for the Centre and to date it has been funded solely by our own efforts. These activities allow the centre to open and provide the many and varied events to help keep us being here. Hence we can help protect this "jewel within the city" and educate people in why their environment, from their back garden, their local park to the environment.............is ever more important!

"Sholing Valleys Study Centre is the emerald gem

.............that gives Sholing its green heart!"
